In Chinese, we often use “你还好吧?” (nǐ hái hǎo ba?) to ask how someone is doing, usually after something bad has happened. For example, in the video, Xiao Zhang had a car accident, and his coworker asked, “他还好吧?” (tā hái hǎo ba?). The coworker is showing concern and hoping that he’s okay. In this case, “他还好吧?” or “你还好吧?” has the same meaning as “你没事吧?” or “他没事吧?” (“Are you okay?” / “Is he okay?”).
We also often use phrases like “还好没怎样” or “还好没事” to express a sense of relief or good luck after something bad happened — meaning “fortunately nothing happened” or “luckily everything’s fine.” It carries a feeling of being thankful or relieved.
Subscribe
Tīng shuō Xiǎo Zhāng chū chēhuò le.I heard Xiao Zhang had a car accident.
Tā hái hǎo ba?Is he okay?
Tā méi shì.He’s fine.
Zhǐ shì chēzi huài le éryǐ.Only his car got damaged.
Hái hǎo tā méi shòu shāng.Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt.
